Overview
Attar Kamal is a traditional Indian attar prepared by hydro-distillation of Pink Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) flowers into pure sandalwood oil. About the Raw Material:
-
Plant Part Used: Pink Lotus Flower with Stems that are not damaged or withered. The team we work with believe that the stems have a unique character that helps in bringing the naturalness of the final product.
-
Harvesting: Flowers are sourced from the North Eastern regions of India during the monsoon season and transported to Kannauj in ice boxes to retain freshness. The flowers are checked for quality & freshness before it gets hydro distilled.
Distillation Process
This attar is produced using traditional deg-bhapka hydro-distillation, a standardized traditional method of distillation practised in and around the regions of Kannauj. The process to make this attar involves layering Pink Lotus flowers in a copper deg (vessel) and distilling them into ~3 kg of sandalwood oil. The process is gradual, using 10–20 kg of lotus in increasing quantity over multiple charges.
-
Number of Distillation Cycles: 15–20 distillation cycles is required onto the same carrier to achieve the desired lotus profile.
-
Flexibility: The method allows artisans to adjust the floral intensity and balance batch-wise, especially valuable when working with limited or variable-quality raw material.
